Australia women’s cricket team

Cricket has always been seen as a sport mainly dominated by men, but apparently, this is not the truth. When we talk about Australian Women’s Cricket, you might be astonished to know that Australian women’s cricket has been going on since as early as 1874, which is also the first time we had our first recorded match that happened to take place in Bendigo.

At the time when the women’s cricket team of Australia was formed and played matches, there was no competition for them, but during the early 1900s they started to have competition at state levels and during the years 1931-1932 they even had competitions for them at the national level.

When they started to have competition at national levels the need for a proper organization to control and coordinate the team was felt, hence the formation of the Australian Women’s Cricket Council (AWCC) took place in March 1931. AWCC had its members from Victoria, New South Wales, and Queensland. During the year 1934 South Australia and Western Australia joined the AWCC while in the years 1977 and 1984 ACT and Tasmania respectively affiliated themselves with AWCC.

It was also the time when they started to have international matches and it was the England Women’s cricket team that became the first one to visit Australia for the first-ever international match in women’s cricket during the years 1934-1935 and the Australian Cricket team was captained by Margaret Peden.

The Wilson Era

During the years 1947-48, it was the time when Australia visited New Zealand for their first tour, this was also the time when Australia made history by defeating the host. During this time Betty Wilson became a star player as she led the team toward victory after scoring 186 runs in the first test cricket.

In the year 1951, when Australia was on tour to England again it was Betty Wilson who became the star and finished off the series but this time she wasn’t alone in standing out for the series this time the fast bowler Norma Whiteman but for the series it came out to be 1-1 as England wasn’t behind.

1958-1973 and IWCC

In 1958 the start of the build-up of the International  Women’s Cricket Council started to take place which involved Australia, England, and New Zealand, but somehow it wasn’t possible eventually mainly due to the lack of funds in the year 1960s. During this time, the Australian Women’s cricket team was considered to be the beast as they till then completed their eleven wins simultaneously.

Australia remained unbeatable until the 1970s, but that was the end of it, in the 1970s itself when New Zealand became the first to defeat Australia. Here during this time, the funding to the IWCC became limited. Marry Allitt who used to be a cricketer herself and a captain as well became one of the biggest funders of cricket and was awarded the Medal of Order of Australia in June 2007, whereas Lorna Thomas was awarded an MBE due to her long-term and phenomenal services and her dedication towards cricket who retired in the 1950s.

Style of Playing Cricket

Now that we are aware of almost everything about the Australian Women’s Cricket team we will now be discussing the style of the play that the Australian Cricket Team has opted for.

The Australian Women’s Cricket Team has never been the one to be known for playing gently during their matches. They have set themselves to be a team that plays the match with aggression and power and this specifically is the case for T20s where they have set themselves to be the dominant team.

This team has never once feared to chase the high scores and not only this they are also the ones to set the high scores for the other teams to chase it. This chasing and setting high scores has kind of become the convenient and their own kind of thing.

With this aggression is one of the most important things that they have glued themselves to is a perfect partnership on the field and the higher strike rate from the early part of each match.
